JAKARTA – Qualcomm officially released the latest 5G, Snapdragon 690. This is the first product of the 6 series to get 5G connectivity support.
So far, 5G support is only available in the Snapdragon 8 series chipsets, namely the Snapdragon 855 and 865 as well as the 7 series, namely the Snapdragon 765. This chipset will be widely used for 5G mobile phones at a more affordable price.
Quoting 9to5Google, Wednesday, June 17, the company said the series 6 support aims for the next generation of networks, such as making 5G accessible to more than 2 billion smartphone users worldwide.
Snapdragon 690 also promises various other improvements from the previous 6 series chips. Qualcomm says it will offer 20 percent better CPU performance and 60 percent faster graphics rendering compared to Snapdragon 675.
There’s an octa-core Kyro 560 CPU (up to 2.0GHz) based on an 8nm fabrication process and an Adreno 619L GPU which enables FHD + on refresh rate 120Hz. This is the first 6-series chip to support high-refresh displays, while Wi-Fi 6 technology is also embedded.
The features that are supported by artificial intelligence (AI) on the Snapdragon 690 chipset will benefit from a 70 percent performance increase, as the AI Engine used is from Qualcomm’s 5th generation. For example, the Hexagon Tensor allows the camera filter to function at high FPS and without lag.

The Snapdragon 690 will support 120Hz displays for faster refresh rates, along with 4K HDR video capture (both a first for the 6-series). Snapdragon 690 will also activate cameras up to 192 megapixels on mid-range devices.
Qualcomm announced that the Snapdragon 690 will be embedded in smartphones from HMD Global, LG Electronics, Motorola, SHARP, TCL, and Wingtech. Nokia says that future 5G devices will come at even more affordable prices.
